Lola ya Bonobo near Kinshasa is the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos, many rescued from poachers or local homes. With wild numbers estimated to have fallen from about 100,000 in the 1980s to roughly 20,000 today, bushmeat hunting remains the main threat.
